Ed Sheeran Beautiful People Lyrics and Meaning
Read below for Lyrics and Commentary:
The beautiful thing about songs is that the lyrics can mean so many things to so many people. Here are some of our insights. What do you think, let us know in the comments!
We are, we are, we are
L.A. on a Saturday night in the summer
Sundown and they all come out
Lamborghinis and their rented Hummers
The party’s on, so they’re headin’ downtown
(‘Round here) everybody’s lookin’ for a come up
And they wanna know what you’re about
Me in the middle with the one I love and
We’re just tryna figure everything out
The song starts out with a couple waiting in line to get on the airplane to go on vacation. While they are waiting, they are beckoned out of line to their “VIP” experience awaiting them. As the couple embark on their unexpected, new, and “strange-to-them” journey, they enter a stretch limo.

When inside, although the limo is stocked with champagne and appetizers on a platter, the couple enjoy snacks they brought from home. Since they aren’t accustomed to tinted windows, they don’t realize how bright the sun is when the window is rolled down and immediately roll it back up.
Bring Your Own Snacks
This is beautiful since there are so many who can relate to both experiences. While the occasional exclusive experience may be appreciated by some, there are many who would equally enjoy their own snacks and beverages. In this, case, their favorite chips and juice box. Nice. On the other hand, there are those who prefer a more luxurious way of traveling as a standard, such as that being mocked in this video.

Meanwhile, a Lamborghini and hummer roar by alongside the stretch limo. Totally a normal everyday sight to see…lol. If you live in LA or are from LA, you know that this can actually be quite true. Perhaps not in a trio like depicted, but they’re exaggerating to make a point.

We don’t fit in well
‘Cause we are just ourselves
I could use some help
Gettin’ out of this conversation, yeah
You look stunning, dear
So don’t ask that question here
This is my only fear, that we become
This stanza is essentially expressing the couple’s experience in a setting with people living in “paradise” with perfect teeth, tanned & toned bodies, tattoos galore, slim figures, and an appetite for “the high life” of pool parties and alcohol at over-the-top sized mansions.
If you pay close attention, you notice the couple don’t mind what’s happening around them
They don’t really feel like they fit in and yet are enjoying being themselves without needing to participate in what everyone else is doing to fit in. An homage to staying true to yourself, no matter how that looks to you.

“You look stunning, dear. So don’t ask that question here.” This verse alludes that the female counterpart is concerned with her appearance in comparison to the “beautiful people” at the party. However, her husband doesn’t let her feel insecure for a second.

Beautiful people
Drop top, designer clothes
Front row at fashion shows
“What d’you do?” And, “Who d’you know?”
Inside the world of beautiful people
Champagne and rolled-up notes
Prenups and broken homes
Surrounded, but still alone
Let’s leave the party
Beauty is more than skin-deep
“Beautiful” is more than just the aesthetic appearance of a person. While there are many people who are beautiful one the inside and out, I feel that this song is more of a message letting people know that while the seemingly glitzy and glamorous life style of a celebrity appears amazing on the outside, looks may be deceiving. Underneath the super cars, luxurious homes and yachts, perfect skin/faces/teeth/bodies, and exclusive experiences, the things that matter deeper to the soul are missing.
“What d’you do?” And, “Who d’you know?”
Instead of caring about a person for who they are, those who are superficial want to know about your career and connections.
Champagne and rolled-up notes
Instead of valuing what matters like spending quality time with the ones you love, there are those who would trade it for alcohol and smoking weed (rolled-up notes).
Prenups and broken homes.
Sad but true. Prenups originated in America. Prior to the Married Women’s Property Act (MWPA) of 1848, prenuptial agreements were necessary for women in the United States so that they didn’t wind up homeless and broke with children in the event of their husbands’ deaths. So a prenup was more originally intended as more of a safeguard or “life insurance” policy in a way. It wasn’t a legal mechanism used to protect a person’s assets in the event of a divorce as it is known for today. It is also a relatively new concept around the world, and traditionally frowned upon in other countries.
Surrounded, but still alone.
This line was chilling. I think so many have at one point or another in their lifetime can relate to feeling surrounded by people, yet lacked a sense of connection to themselves and others. Therefore, this leaves us feeling lonely. I’ve once heard that loneliness isn’t due to the lack of affection, it’s the lack of connection. When we are disconnected from ourselves and those we love and care for, we lack the direction to feel connected. It’s empty when one feels a lack of purpose.
That’s not who we are
That’s not who we are
[We are, we are, we are]
We are not beautiful
Yeah, that’s not who we are
[We are, we are, we are]
We are not beautiful
L.A. mm
Drove for hours last night and we made it nowhere (nowhere, nowhere)
I see stars in your eyes when we’re halfway there (all night)
I’m not fazed by all them lights and flashin’ cameras (uh)
‘Cause with my arms around you, there’s no need to care
We don’t fit in well
We are just ourselves
I could use some help
Gettin’ out of this conversation, yeah
You look stunning, dear
So don’t ask that question here
This is my only fear, that we become
I could use some help gettin’ out of this conversation
The conversations that people have in the entertainment industry may not always the the most comfortable, fulfilling, or meaningful. So this may not necessarily be due to the person, but perhaps due to the culture of creating a “veil” so that there is a barrier between one’s true self, and the “public image.”
In an interview with Ed Sheeran, he expresses that he believes it is difficult for people to be themselves in the entertainment industry. In order to be successful “being yourself,” the person much be able to find success in doing so. That doesn’t work for everyone, so you do have lots of artists who compromise who they are in some cases to satisfy a contractual agreement.
Be True To Yourself

Be True. Do You.
So to us, this song means staying true to yourself. There isn’t anything wrong with valuing beauty, health, and wellness to look and feel your best. However, the message here, is that there is a difference between feeling confident in who you are and vanity.
Confidence
Confidence is believing in yourself and being comfortable in your own skin. You don’t feel like you have to change your behavior or hide anything about yourself in order to please others. Others who are also self-confident and value the same thing will accept and appreciate you as you are.
Vanity
Vanity is having excessive pride in or admiration of one’s own appearance or achievements. These are external experiences that fade and are only meaningful to some. What’s worse is that if you’re accomplished in things you don’t really believe in for the money or fame, you may not truly feel meaning in your accomplishments.
Developing yourself from the inside out is an everlasting experience of self and expression. It can impact others that cross your path in a more meaningful way.
Concluding Thoughts on the Meaning of Ed Sheeran Beautiful People
If you are fortunate enough to really get to know yourself, you will be confident in any setting. You may feel out of place when in an unfamiliar environment, however, you won’t let it define you. Nor will you allow yourself to feel pressure to change in a way that doesn’t honor yourself. In addition, you gift yourself the ability to get to know others beyond the surface too.
